Bedroom Makeover - A Room Fit For A Modern Princess

When I realised that the fabric on my old headboard needed a refresh as it had faded and discoloured from the sun, I knew it would be the beginning of big changes in our bedroom - I was ready for something completely different.

I also happened to be working on a few ideas for our little TV room, and realised that I could recover and repurpose most of the headboard in there on the platform sofa I was making, meaning that a new bed was required.

I had been a fan of four poster beds for years, but I knew that being the creature of comfort that I am, that although I love the way they look, that I wouldn’t really be happy without a comfortable headboard.

Then I came across the Waterloo ** bed from The Original Bed Co. ** , and I knew it was THE ONE. Not only does the metal frame have a beautiful shape, but it also has an upholstered head and footboard - literally the best of both worlds.

They have a selection of lovely in-house fabrics, but I have learnt over the last few years that if Cleo can get her claws into something, she will. So I went for a bespoke option using stunning velvet from Romo** in ‘Cinnamon’, knowing that she has thankfully shown little interest in scratching our velvet sofa, so in theory, she wouldn’t be interested in the bed upholstery either. So far, so good.

The cinnamon colour is perfect in the very neutral room, bringing in more depth and warmth, whilst being in-keeping with the neutrals. I adore it.

Dressing the Waterloo bed, is a beautiful set of 100% linen bedding from Bedfolk** * which is just the most beautiful quality. So, SO soft and inviting, which is a little problematic, as every time I make the bed, I just want to climb right back into it. We have a deep fitted sheet, so no more corners popping off, and I love that the pillowcase opening is in the centre of the back. If you’re particular like me about styling your bed, you will also appreciate this detail. No openings on show, regardless of the end you’re looking at. Whilst I do still love high thread count crisp cotton sometimes in the summer, you just can’t beat high quality linen for any time of year, but particularly in the cooler months. The drape is irresistible, and as a good friend once said about linen bedding, it just hugs you.

I added some rust coloured frilled gingham cushions that I had been eyeing-off and become slightly obsessed with which are by Projektityyny from Att Pynta, a gorgeous heavily textured ‘Kellan’ cushion from Soho Home, along with a double sided tasseled ‘Ezra’ throw also from Soho Home. Our bed has once again risen to one of the most popular places to for everyone to hang out in the house - I keep finding Baxter settled down in there watching TV!

Our vintage drawers, that had really seen better days, were replaced with the quietly elegant 'Salina' chest of drawers ** by Ercol from Heal’s. They’re lower and shallower than what we had before, which works so much better for the space.

I waited until the bed arrived to decide on the paint colour, and ended up choosing Stone II by Paint and Paper Library, which is the perfect warm neutral. It’s ever so slightly darker with a touch more brown than my interim off-white, and really has made a massive difference. The room feels fresh and cosy all at once, and it changes from the softest off-white to a warm creamy pale beige depending on the light. I took the colour up over the cornice and onto the ceiling too, giving it a seamless, more modern look which also has the added advantage of not drawing attention to wonky lines where walls and ceilings meet, which this house has plenty of.

I still have plans to change the colour of the wardrobe wall, but I haven’t quite got around to doing that yet. I’m thinking something rich and dark that will help my new baby, I mean TV, blend in.

Yes, that is a Frame TV * nestled into the purpose built TV niche on the wardrobe wall. I’ll tell you a little story about why you’ve not seen this end of the bedroom for maybe two years. Sorry Ed…

Once upon a time, around two years ago, Ed decided to swap our decade old television with a newly purchased one that was originally intended for the living room. Only caring that it was a smart TV and that the old one wasn’t, he didn’t think twice about the fact that it didn’t actually fit inside the niche, and had to sit outside it, protruding over the edge by a centimetre or so on both sides. He thought it looked ‘okay’. I on the other hand, was mortified, but let it slide, because clearly I’m a brilliant wife, but never stopped giving it the side-eye.

Never again did that end of the room get photographed or shown. But with so much effort going into painting and revamping the room, I decided that I could no longer let it slide, and made a spur of the moment purchase last week. So I am FINALLY the proud owner of a Samsung The Frame TV, and I am not sorry. Of course now I want to replace our other TV’s with larger Frames too (this is the 32 inch), because yes, it’s everything it’s cracked up to be, god damn it.

I still have a few things I would like to do in here, to really finish the room, including changing the window coverings, but I’m super pleased with the new look bedroom, and also pleased with the fact that I still have my beloved channel tufted headboard, reincarnated with a different use in a different room in different fabric!

Now I need to have a little lie down, on my beautiful new four poster bed, because this room has really taken it out of me. I do hope you like it!
