24 Sofa (and Day) Beds For All Tastes And Budgets

Sofa beds can be tricky. I know this because I have looked many, many times before for myself, and because a LOT of you asked me to suggest some recently when I did some shopping dilemma Q&A’s on Instagram. But as I have discovered researching this post, there is actually a vast selection to choose from and prices to suit almost all budgets. You just have to dig. And if there’s one thing I’m good at, it’s finding things online. Just call me Sherlock.

For some, the sofa bed will be used as the main sofa in the living room, and will therefore be used every day in sofa mode, and either regularly or occasionally as a guest bed. This is where you should really go for quality and spend more if you possibly can. If it’s going to be used regularly as a guest bed, you might want to look at designs that have actual mattresses. But don’t compromise on sofa comfort because it’s a guest bed, you need the best of both worlds.

If the sofa bed will not be in the main living room and might be used every so often in a guest room, or even in a kids room for sleepovers you can scrimp more.

I’ve tried to cover not only different price points, but different styles that will suit those different rooms. Some are more traditional sofa beds with actual mattresses, and others are the ‘click-clack’ fold-down design that seem to be becoming more the norm, or day beds that don’t transform, but you can just throw some bedding on. As you will see, some are more suited to being used more occasionally as beds than others, but it’s obviously about what suits your needs and budget best.

Speaking of budgets, I have broken this down into under and over a thousand pounds (give or take), as one persons ‘affordable’ is another persons ‘expensive’, and vice versa.

It’s important with sofas and indeed sofa beds to do your own sit / lie test if at all possible, or check reviews / ask about firmness if you you can’t.

1. Hyde Sofa Bed - Habitat Comes in twenty-five beautiful fabrics and leathers and is currently on sale. It’s a modern classic streamlined shape, and looks so much more expensive than it is. Go, go, go!

Design: Pull out

2. Färlöv Sofa Bed - Ikea This traditional shape won’t date, and is a bargain price. Comes in four colours with removable, machine washable fabrics, so it’s perfect for homes with grubby kids and pets (or people) if you don’t have the heart to enforce a no food or pets on the sofa policy.

Design: Classic fold out with slim mattress

3. Lubi Daybed - Utility Design This modern day bed is super versatile and can be used as a sofa, a single or double bed. Currently on sale which brings it into this price bracket, though it’s slightly over at full price. But hey, my blog, my rules. Available in fourteen different fabrics (possibly more if you check out other stockists).

Design: Fold out

4. Hinge Luxe Sofa Bed - Heal’s Another rule breaker on the price with the sale price coming just under a thousand, but I couldn’t resist this one as it’s such a beauty. It also comes in a lovely royal blue which is a nice change from classic navy.

Design: Click-clack fold flat

5. Show Wood Sofa - House by John Lewis John Lewis are on fire at the moment with their in-house designs and are such good prices too. This lovely design with a vintage nod and modern comfort also comes in pale grey.

Design: Click-clack fold flat

6. Bailey Sofa Bed - Marks & Spencer Another nod to vintage design with a simple pull out bed mode and currently a whopping 50% off. Did someone say BARGAIN?

Design: Pull out

7. Kota - Habitat Love this armless beauty which would work so well in almost any room including kids bedrooms for sleepovers.

Design: Click-clack fold flat

8. Wallace Day Bed - Wayfair I do love a day bed / sofa / guest bed situation and this simple version could be dressed in so many ways. I would make a fitted sheet style cover for a mattress out of a boucle fabric, keeping it neutral but amping it up with loads of texture in different cushions. Uh-oh, I may have just planted a seed in my own mind.

Design: Just insert single mattress

9. Flottebo Day Bed - Ikea Another great day bed / single bed option, this one comes in three colours with the added bonus of storage in the base. I will admit the colour options don’t really do it for me, but at this price you could look into having it reupholstered to make it into a really special piece. Nice one Ikea.

Design: Just add bedding

10. Logan Sofa Bed - Marks & Spencer Not my colour but I wanted to include this one as I know a lot of you like these jewel tones and this one is a great compact example at a great price.

Design: Fold out

*11. Harlow Sofa Bed - made.com Love this pared back design that comes in this Midnight Grey or Blue Steel, and like most of Made’s products, it’s a great price point too.

Design: Click-clack fold flat

*12. Assim Day Bed - made.com I’ve long been a fan of this gorgeous Day Bed. Not marketed as a guest bed, but it’s the right size at only a smidge smaller than a standard single, so I see no reason why not. And just look at how gorgeous it is!

Design: Removable end cushions

1. Pillow Sofa Bed with Chaise - Heal’s Not going to lie, I’m a bit in love with this one. That colour! But if it’s not your up of tea, it comes in forty-three other ones too.

Design: Classic fold out with slim mattress

2. Bamboo Lounge Bed - Tine K Home Adore this option for inside or out. Not that I’m suggesting you should ask your guests to sleep in the garden. Not sure that super thin mattress would be particularly comfy to sleep on, and nor is it marketed as a bed, but you could easily cover a second piece of foam, or replace with a thicker one (not a UK standard mattress size though), but anyway, when something looks that good, who cares!

Design: Just add bedding. And maybe a thicker mattress.

3. Newington Sofa Bed - Habitat Bit taken with this unusual shape and the colour and it comes in fourteen other fabrics too.

Design: Classic fold out with slim mattress

*4. Compact Sofa Bed - The Conran Shop One of my favourite places to dream, The Conran Shop never disappoints on style or quality. I have apparently developed quite the obsession with completely impractical sofa colours. I’m not sorry. Currently 30% off.

Design: Pull out

5. Parley Day Bed - Loaf You might not be surprised to know that I’ve admired Parley (yes, we’re on first name terms) for a long time. She’s a beauty and I can just picture her in a gorgeous (very lucky) kids room.

Design: Pull out

*6. Float Sofa Bed - The Conran Shop Yes, it’s another Conran beauty. My thing for pink sofas is nothing new, in fact I dedicated a post to them almost exactly four years ago, and I’ll be adding this stunning wool number to my list. Although if pink’s not your thing, you can choose from nine other options too.

Design: Pull out

7. Andes Sofa Bed - West Elm This is a gorgeous modern classic design that could be your every day sofa with an occasional guest bed. Comes in a grey velvet or stone twill.

Design: Click-clack fold back

8. Jonesy Sofa Bed - Loaf Ah Loaf, let me count the ways. You could do much much worse than inviting Jonesy into your home. Available in a staggering 159 fabrics, or even supply your own. How’s that for choice?

Design: Classic fold out with slim mattress

9. Jude Sofa Bed - Sofa Workshop Love a corner sofa, but don’t have the space. If you do, Jude is a fab pared back option with sixty-eight fabric options.

Design: Classic fold out with slim mattress

10. Sleep Day Bed - Nest Very cool super modern day bed that can be used as a single bed and also folds out to a double bed. May be available in other fabrics from other Softline stockists.

Design: Fold out

11.  Clam Sofa Bed Ligne Roset - Chaplins I had to include this one - it’s such a design classic and is available in fifteen of the most stunning colours. A real show stopper.

Design: Fold down

*12. Harper Sofa Bed - The Conran Shop Sometimes boxy is good, and this is one of those times. Available in a stunning array of 67 fabrics from linen to bouclé, velvet, wool and alpaca. Modern laid back luxe at its finest, and this one is my absolute favourite. Typically, it's also the most expensive. Le sigh.

Design: Classic fold out with slim mattress

These edits are by no means exhaustive, but I had to draw the line at some point, so there’s a starting point of twenty four options and I really do love them all for different reasons. Well, except the one I said I didn’t like, but I have included them all for good reason.

As always, don’t discount vintage and second hand options, you may just find something incredible and unique that you can have reupholstered, or even something that just needs a clean. Or just an absolute bargain. Try Vinterior, Pamono and Ebay, and the many fantastic vintage sellers on Instagram. In fact I really do need to do a round up of my favourites. And if you only need a single size or day bed, remember to look at kids beds / day beds too as there are often hidden gems hidden amongst the really ‘kiddy’ designs.

Okay that’s all now, this post has done me in. Later!
