The New BISSELL ICON Cordless Vacuum Cleaner

[This is a paid partnership with BISSELL, all thoughts and opinions, my own]

We don’t have a cleaner. Haven’t for years, and one of the things that used to always be bottom of the list, something I would often ask (beg!) Ed to do so I didn’t have to, is the vacuuming. I really loathed it.

But I’ve come to realise that it’s not actual vacuuming that I hate, but rather lugging around a huge heavy machine and the constant plugging in and unplugging, tripping over cables, cables not quite reaching far enough and so on that actually annoyed me. Oh, and did I mention the precarious balancing of said heavy machine on the stairs? I’m sure anyone whose home goes over more than one floor will be nodding their heads in agreement.

I’m the first to admit though, that I did also have reservations about the suction capabilities of a cordless vacuum cleaner, as I once had a mini handheld cordless that was as good as completely useless even when fully charged - it didn’t suck anything up, and literally had about one minute of battery power before it stopped working altogether - talk about a disappointment! Needless to say, it really put me off the idea of a cordless vacuum for a long time.

But I needn’t have worried, as cordless power has clearly come a VERY long way since then, and honestly, I will never go back to a corded electric vacuum cleaner. Ever.

I actually want to vacuum the house now - this has never been the case before and I genuinely find it rather satisfying. The dread has gone!

I love being able to see how full the dirt tank is (which is super quick and easy to empty), and that there are no bags required - from a convenience perspective and also from an environmental perspective too - it’s just really unnecessary. The icon has easily washable filters too, with a Smart Seal allergen system.

Many of you will know that our cat Cleo is one of the fluffiest cats in town. Does that girl shed or what?! No matter how much you brush her (admittedly not a lot as she hates it!), or stroke her, the fur just keeps on flying. It does indeed get everywhere. Edie has super long dark hair (I’m sure I also contribute to the hair issues!) and long hair and hoover brushes just don’t mix. Baxter and Ed both have short lighter hair, so I can’t really incriminate them in the hair everywhere department, but Baxter does love to help in the kitchen, and is still completely incapable of keeping any crumbs on a plate. Oh, and the fluff from the clothes dryer just seems to get all over house too. Is it just us?! Add to that the rug that just keeps shedding in Edie’s room, and we are a family that really gives our vacuum cleaners a thorough workout.

What has driven me to distraction with other vacuum cleaners over the years is the fact that the brush rolls constantly need to be dismantled to have all the hair that gets tangled in them cut out in order for them to work properly again. In our house, this really was constant - literally every time I vacuumed. Sometimes twice. So I was particularly sceptical when I read that the ICON has a tangle free brush roll, but guess what?

IT’S TRUE!

This is an absolute revelation as far as I’m concerned. Like really REALLY amazing. I know this is not something I should probably be that excited about, but I do think this is breakthrough technology, and I’m grateful that I won’t ever have to lose chunks of my life, sitting on the kitchen floor dismantling and cutting out hair tangles from the brush roll. Aside from hair, Edie’s rug (aka the rug that just keeps shedding) usually clogs the brush up immediately too, but not anymore. I’d say 99% of the fluff went straight into the dirt tank, and I only needed to pull the tiniest bit of fluff and hair out of the brush roll after vacuuming the whole house. I am SO impressed.

We have a mixture of hard floors, tiles and carpet, and it handles all three with ease, and I love the fact it can also lie flat to easily reach under beds and sofas, and there’s a light so you can see in dark areas too.

The ICON also has a wall mountable charging station, which will be brilliant when we create our utility room a little later this year (more to come about that - it’s VERY exciting!), so I will be making sure I work that into the design of the room.

I know you’ll be wondering about the battery power. There is up to 50 minutes of charge time if used on low power, but I know it takes me less than half an hour to do the whole house now that there is no cable moving down-time, so it’s more than enough - and our house is pretty big! And the suction? It’s powerful. I don’t think there is any sacrifice being made here for the sake of being cordless.

I’ve said it before, but it really is the little details that can make life so much easier, and it’s not until you use a cordless vacuum cleaner that you really realise how annoying cables are. And I just love the upright ease of the ICON. Life is short, and we are all busy, so if something makes chores easier and faster, I’m definitely here for it.

I can spend less time carting a heavy vacuum cleaner around the house, plugging and unplugging and de-clogging the brush roll, and more time doing the things I love.

BISSELL have been in the business of helping people keep their homes clean for nearly 150 years, so I think they know a thing or two about vacuum cleaners! And for me there are no downsides to this brilliant cordless vacuum. Well, Cleo is terrified of it (and any other vacuum cleaner), but I think we can all live with that!
